How to Become a Freelance Writer Online
One of the biggest ways of making money these days on the internet involves writing. Rather you own a blog, or guest post, or are a freelance writer. I have already covered how you can make money blogging as a beginner. So, today I will teach you how to become a freelance writer online.
Pick a Topic
As much as you may feel you are a great writer when it comes to anything, chances are there are certain topics you are better at than others. Starting out, you will be wanting to build a portfolio. People will need to know you, and they will need to know your work. That’s why it’s best to target a certain audience. Rather it be fiction/nonfiction or sports/politics; you want to build yourself a positive reputation – and get yourself known in the game.
Over time, if you would like to branch off into different areas, then by all means try it.
This goes hand in hand with what I just mentioned. You will need to get yourself out there for people to notice you. Make sure you are comfortable with communicating, or writing query letters or resumes. You want to sound good to a company. Give them a reason to choose you. Being new to the Freelancing world – I recommend taking chances that you only feel you will succeed at. If a job seems to daunting or challenging, pass on it until you have gained more experience. Being new, you don’t want your first experiences being bad ones.
Join Writing Forums or Communities
It is a great idea to see how your skills match up to people who have been freelancing for a while. One of the easiest ways is to join groups and read others work, or experiences. Take note on how they seem to put things together to prepare themselves for a job. Also, ask questions!
People join communities as a support chain. You are all a group of people who share a common interests. You may be able to help them just as much as they can help you. Never feel like you can’t ask people questions that have done this type of work.
Find a Place to Write Your First Article
Once you feel like you have all you need to take the jump, then take it. You should know at this point what your topic of interest is. Now you can decide who you would like to write for.
Those are just a few of the common places to start your Freelance journey. You may pick up additional places from members of the same community.
Build Your Portfolio
Some may choose to try building a portfolio before they locate places to write their first pieces of work. Personally, I think you need something to build a foundation on. Get a few pieces of work out of the way for a newspaper, website. something non profit etc. just so you have can have a few examples on your portfolio. To me this makes more sense than having a blank canvas to present to a company when you’re looking to do work for them.
